Eric Omondi is a household name in comedy, so much so that he has christened himself the president of comedy. And yet Kenyans do not take him seriously. Whilst being in the limelight has its own share of battles, his little by little is becoming a losing battle in the Kenyan arena.
Most of his critics label him clout chaser, many noting that he goes to the extremes just to get their attention. In the recent past, he got tongues wagging by saying that Kenyan musicians are a letdown. This sparked a huge debate that saw him trend on major interweb, with his faultfinders wondering if he was a musician or comedian. Many alluring, he was looking for kiki.

Some Kenyans think his comedy is outdated and lacks creativity. This has made a section of Kenyans to look down upon him. With the onset of many digital platforms, more and more people are creating new content which gives comedy fans variety of content. Hence, many of them compare it to Eric Omondi’s, which they say is below the bar. Thus has made him to only resonate with a small fraction of audiences while missing out on the majority. His charisma, maybe, is slowly dwindling, and he needs a quick upgrade.
The president of comedy has many thinking he quit comedy to reality TV. His floppy wife material show gave his critics a field day. More so that it canceled the show, which he said left him counting losses. The mature audience felt the show wasn’t appropriate for the Kenyan market, while others thought he was promoting moral decadence among ladies. This was justifiable because he had lost his mojo with Kenyans, many seeing him as a joke gone too far.
Majority of Kenyans feel he is not patriotic enough. Whenever he has a show outside Kenya, Eric hypes the foreign country, forgetting he still is Kenyan. Eric Omondi is on record, telling Tanzanians that he loves them and wishes he lived in Bongo. This did not go down well with several Kenyans. He received a good thrashing and trolls, especially on Twitter. And so his fellow countrymen don’t take him seriously? By the way, most of his shows are now outside Kenya and perhaps his comedy is only relevant outside of Kenya.
Finally, some people think it is time he hanged the comedy boots and diversify to other things. Why you ask? Well, for starters, he has been in the industry for long and since his comedy scorecard is low; he needs to reinvent himself. This will not only keep him relevant but also resonate with his back in the day’s fans, who are also now older and mature. Most of the comedians worth his salt have now become household names in other sectors or and have shelved their comedy.
Well, Eric Omondi is surely controversial with a love hate relationship with Kenyans and we hope he strives to mend these ties the sooner the better.
